Boyana Church

Boyana Church

The Boyana Church, located in the eponymous suburb at the foot of Vitosha Mountain near Sofia, is an outstanding example of medieval Bulgarian architecture and art. This sacred building, constructed in three stages (11th, 13th, and 19th centuries), was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979. It owes its global fame to the unique frescoes dating back to 1259, which are considered masterpieces of Eastern European medieval painting.

The interior of the church houses 89 scenes featuring over 240 human figures. These frescoes, created before the Italian Renaissance, stand out for their remarkable realism, individuality, and emotional expressiveness. Particularly famous are the portraits of the patrons, Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava, as well as the Bulgarian Tsar Constantine Asen and Tsaritsa Irina. These depictions are among the oldest surviving portraits of historical figures in Bulgaria.

Visitors to the Boyana Church have the rare opportunity to see these exceptionally well-preserved works of art up close. The complex is surrounded by a small, well-maintained park with old trees, providing a tranquil atmosphere. Due to the fragility of the frescoes, access to the interior is strictly regulated to maintain stable temperature and humidity, ensuring an exclusive and awe-inspiring experience for visitors.
