These rock formations rise steeply from the surrounding plain, reaching elevations of up to 400 meters above sea level. The region around Savalou is historically linked to the Mahi people and served as a natural retreat in the past due to its strategic location. Geologically, the hills belong to the Precambrian basement of the West African Craton, with erosion over millions of years creating the characteristic rounded shapes. The valleys between the hills are highly fertile and are used intensively for cultivating cotton, cashews, and grains. The climate is sub-humid tropical, marked by a pronounced dry season. Beyond their ecological importance, the hills hold high spiritual relevance for the local population, as reflected in numerous traditional shrines found throughout the area.

During the heavy rainy season, the earthen trails can become quite muddy and the smooth granitic surfaces uncomfortably and dangerously slippery for casual walkers.
