Bird Habitat of Lake Nokoué (Benin)

Weather…

Lake Nokoué in southern Benin, situated near the capital Porto-Novo and the economic hub of Cotonou, is one of West Africa's most significant wetlands for birdlife. As a brackish lagoon, it has a unique blend of freshwater and marine ecosystems that support over 35,000 birds from more than 100 species. The area is recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance and serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling along the East Atlantic Flyway. Particularly noteworthy are the large populations of flamingos, herons, pelicans, and various kingfisher species that nest in the shallow waters and surrounding mangroves. The lake is also famous for the stilt village of Ganvié, where residents have lived in harmony with the aquatic environment for centuries. However, environmental challenges such as pollution from neighboring urban areas and the spread of invasive water hyacinths threaten this delicate balance. Conservation projects are working to improve water quality and promote sustainable fishing practices to safeguard the birds' habitat for the future.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is the dry season from December to February when migratory birds are present in large numbers. In the rainy season (April-October) many local species nest, but viewing is hampered by dense vegetation.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning from 6 to 9am is the most active time for birds fishing and calling. At dusk from 5pm flocks return to their roosting trees, a spectacular sight.
📜
Etiquette
Stay in quiet boats or on observation platforms and avoid loud conversations that disturb bird colonies. Do not use flash and do not approach nesting sites closer than 50 meters.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are essential to identify the diversity of waterbirds. Bring a waterproof camera bag as humidity around the lake is high.
🧭
Getting there
Lake Nokoué lies northwest of Cotonou and is reachable by car or by pirogue (dugout canoe). Local fishermen rent boats for birdwatching on the lake.
🦌
What to expect
Birds can hide in the reeds - stay quiet and wait for them to emerge. Changing spots after half an hour may reveal new species as birds constantly patrol.
