Allada Plateau (Benin)

Weather…

The Allada Plateau is located in southern Benin within the Atlantique Department and is one of the most fertile and economically significant regions of the country. It is a gently sloping sedimentary plateau characterized by its distinctive red ferralsol soils (known as "Terre de Barre"), which are good for intensive cultivation. Historically, the plateau is inextricably linked to the Kingdom of Allada, which held a dominant position on the Slave Coast during the 16th and 17th centuries and is considered the cradle of the Abomey and Porto-Novo dynasties. Geographically, the plateau extends between the Ouémé Valley to the east and the Couffo Valley to the west. The region serves as the heart of Benin's pineapple production, accounting for a substantial portion of national exports. The original rainforest vegetation has largely been replaced today by agricultural fields and palm plantations. Despite heavy agricultural use, the plateau maintains a deep cultural identity through its traditional palaces and sacred forests. The climate is sub-equatorial, featuring high humidity and two distinct rainy seasons.
