Brussels Stock Exchange
The Brussels Stock Exchange (Bourse de Bruxelles), prominently located on the bustling Place de la Bourse, is a magnificent architectural monument and a lively focal point of city life in Brussels. This massive, palatial building was constructed between 1868 and 1873 in the Neo-Renaissance style following the grand designs of the renowned architect Léon-Pierre Suys. Its creation was an integral part of the massive urban renewal project that involved covering the Senne river. Historically intriguing, the edifice is built directly over the ruins of the former Récollets (Franciscan) convent; its fascinating archaeological remains can still be explored today in a dedicated underground museum. The exterior facade of the Bourse is lavishly decorated with intricate sculptures and artistic ornaments, with contributions from famous contemporary artists, including a young Auguste Rodin. In 2015, the building officially closed its doors to classical stock market trading. Following an extensive and masterful renovation, it triumphantly reopened to the general public in 2023 and now proudly houses 'Belgian Beer World', a state-of-the-art experience center paying a grand tribute to Belgium's world-famous beer culture.
