Animal Flower Cave (Barbados)

Weather…

The Animal Flower Cave is situated at the rugged northernmost tip of Barbados in the parish of Saint Lucy, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes spectacularly against the limestone cliffs. First described in 1750 by the Welsh clergyman Griffith Hughes, it is the island's only accessible sea cave. The cave gets its name from the sea anemones, known locally as 'animal flowers,' that inhabit the rock pools within its chambers. These anemones have stinging tentacles that retract when touched, much like a flower. Geologically, the cave floor is made of a coral ledge estimated to be around 400,000 to 500,000 years old. The most striking features of the cave are the large natural openings or 'windows' that look directly out onto the ocean, offering framed views of the turquoise water and white surf. Visitors can often descend into the cave with a guide and, weather permitting, swim in the deep natural rock pools. The cliffside above the cave provides a panoramic vantage point for whale watching and viewing the dramatic coastline of North Point.
