Al Khamis Mosque (Bahrain)

Weather…

Al-Khamis Mosque is widely regarded as one of the oldest mosques in the entire Gulf region and stands as a major religious and architectural monument in Bahrain. Its origins are believed to date back as far as 692 CE, during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Umar II. The most striking feature of the mosque is its twin minarets, though these were actually added during later centuries (likely in the 14th and 15th centuries). The prayer hall once featured a flat roof supported by wooden columns, which was characteristic of early Islamic architecture in the region. Important inscriptions and engraved stones were discovered near the site and are now displayed in the adjacent visitor center. For centuries, it served as a premier center for learning and worship before falling into disuse in the 19th century. Today, the restored ruins offer a compelling look into the early spread of Islam throughout the Bahraini archipelago.
