Absheron National Park (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Absheron National Park is located at the southeastern tip of the Absheron Peninsula, on a narrow spit of land known as Shah Dili, extending into the Caspian Sea. Established on February 8, 2005, it covers an area of 783 hectares and was designed to protect the unique semi-desert landscapes and the diverse marine life of the region. The park is characterized by vast sandy dunes, saline wetlands, and a dry, windy climate that shapes its ever-shifting terrain. It is most famous for being a sanctuary for the Caspian seal, an endangered and endemic species that is often sighted along its shores. Additionally, the park serves as a vital stopover for over 50 species of migratory birds, including greater flamingos, mute swans, and various herons. Despite its proximity to the industrial and urban center of Baku, the park remains a pristine wilderness, offering a stark contrast to the nearby metropolis. Its location at the very edge of the peninsula makes it a geographically significant point where the land meets the vast expanse of the world's largest inland body of water.

🧭
Getting there
The national park is typically accessed by car or taxi from Baku, taking around an hour. Public transport is very limited, so a private transfer or rental vehicle is generally the most reliable method.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during spring or early autumn when the weather is convenient for coastal walks. Summers can be excessively hot with minimal shade, while winters are generally cool and windy along the peninsula.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain consists primarily of flat, sandy coastal areas and semi-desert landscapes that are easy to navigate. Most paths are unpaved, so expect some resistance when walking for extended periods along the shore.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors should bring plenty of drinking water, sun protection including hats, and binoculars for spotting wildlife. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for the uneven sandy environments.
