Balakhany Oil Field (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Balakhany oil field is one of the oldest and most historically significant petroleum deposits in the world. Located on the Abşeron Peninsula near Baku, it marks the beginning of the global industrial oil drilling era. In 1871, the first mechanically drilled oil well in the Russian Empire was successfully completed here. During the late 19th century, Balakhany was the center of operations for the Nobel brothers and the Rothschild family, who introduced innovative extraction techniques and the region's first pipeline. Over more than a century, the field has yielded hundreds of millions of tons of oil and remains operational to this day despite its long history. In recent years, efforts have been made to ecologically rehabilitate the area and introduce modern extraction methods to utilize the remaining reserves. Today, the area also houses the Balakhany Industrial Park, which focuses on recycling and green economy, providing an interesting contrast to the site's historical oil production.
