Mardakan Castle (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Mardakan Castle, also known as the Great Mardakan Fortress, was built in 1187 by Akhsitan I. It was constructed to celebrate the Shirvanshah's victory over enemy forces and to strengthen the coastal defense of the Absheron Peninsula. The central tower is 22 meters high and divided into five stories, accessible via internal stone staircases. The fortress is surrounded by a seven-meter-high outer wall that encloses a courtyard measuring approximately 28 by 25 meters. In the center of the courtyard is a deep well that ensured the garrison's water supply during long sieges. The architecture is characterized by massive walls and narrow embrasures typical of medieval Azerbaijani military architecture. Today, the castle is a significant historical monument and demonstrates the strategic brilliance of the builders of that era.
