Cerro Galán (Argentina)

Weather…

Cerro Galán in Catamarca province is not an ordinary mountain, but the remains of one of the largest supervolcano eruptions in Earth's history. Its caldera, with a diameter of about 35 kilometers, is so massive that its full extent was only recognized through satellite imagery. In the center of this giant basin, the actual peak rises to 5,912 meters. The interior of the caldera is a surreal world of its own: here lies Laguna Diamante, an extremely salty lake that is home to flamingos and specialized microorganisms. The isolation and extreme conditions of the Puna make access difficult and a true adventure, offering insights into the immense power of nature and life forms under the most extreme conditions.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessing this giant volcanic crater deep in the Argentine Puna requires a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. Expeditions usually depart from El Peñón or Antofagasta de la Sierra, travelling over rough, unmarked desert tracks.
📅
Best season
Late spring to early autumn (October to April) is typically best. Winter brings extreme cold, biting winds, and potential snow blockages at these extremely high altitudes, making access incredibly treacherous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is an otherworldly high-altitude desert landscape featuring the massive caldera, hot springs, and saline lakes. The ground is mostly loose gravel, pumice, and volcanic rock with very little vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
You must pack for extreme conditions: heavy windproof and insulated clothing, polarized sunglasses, ample water, emergency fuel, and high-energy supplies. The intense UV radiation makes strong sunblock mandatory.
🅿️
Parking
There is no formal parking. Vehicles traverse the caldera directly or stop at specific scenic points of interest like Laguna Diamante. Always ensure you are on stable ground when stopping in this remote environment.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness is a severe and common risk here, often exceeding 4,500 meters. The area is completely isolated with no mobile signal. Traveling with a local experienced driver and a satellite phone is critical.
⏱️
Time needed
Visiting Cerro Galán is typically a full-day expedition from the nearest towns, requiring many hours of rough driving just to reach the caldera rim, explore the landscape, and return safely before nightfall.
