The Port of Luanda is Angola's largest and busiest seaport, serving as a critical pillar of the national economy. Located in a natural bay protected by the Ilha de Luanda, it has excellent shipping conditions in the South Atlantic. Historically, the port was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century and served for centuries as a central hub for colonial trade. Today, it handles over 70 percent of Angola's imports, with container terminals, general cargo facilities, and oil industry support docks forming its core infrastructure. The port is directly linked to the interior via the Luanda Railway, facilitating the efficient transport of goods inland. Extensive modernization efforts have been undertaken in recent years to expand capacity and improve handling efficiency for large cargo vessels. Despite competition from newer ports, Luanda remains the logistical heart of the country.
