Ilhéu dos Pássaros Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Ilhéu dos Pássaros Nature Reserve is located on a small island in Mussulo Bay, about 30 kilometers south of Luanda's city center. The reserve was established on August 2, 1973, and covers an area of just 1.7 square kilometers, almost entirely covered by mangrove forests. This protected zone is of critical importance as a nesting and resting site for numerous migratory bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, and various heron species. The tides strongly influence the ecosystem, creating nutrient-rich mudflats for coastal birds. Due to its proximity to the growing metropolis of Luanda, the reserve is under constant ecological pressure from pollution and human activities. Nevertheless, it remains a valuable sanctuary for biodiversity and an important research area for Angolan ornithology.
