The Fort of Santa Maria de Cabinda is a historic defensive structure in Angola's exclave of the same name, witnessing centuries of Portuguese presence in this strategically important region. The original fortification was erected in the late 18th century to defend Portuguese claims against other European powers such as France and England. Particularly significant is its proximity to the site where the Treaty of Simulambuco was signed in 1885, which officially placed Cabinda under Portuguese protectorate. The fort served not only military purposes but was also a center for trade and administration in the coastal region. Despite destruction throughout history, its remains remain a symbol of Cabinda's distinct identity within Angola. Today, the site attracts historians interested in colonial boundary-making and the diplomatic history of Central Africa.
