Best season
The best months to see the reintroduced ibex in Sorteny Natural Park are from May to October. In spring and summer they graze on the high slopes, in autumn they move lower. In winter they are often found in the lower valleys.
Best time of day
Ibex are active early morning and late afternoon when they graze on pastures. In the midday heat they rest in shady rock niches. Especially in the early morning hours they can be seen well.
Etiquette
Keep at least 100 metres distance from the animals to avoid stressing them. Do not feed them and never approach kids. Stay on marked trails so the animals become accustomed to human presence.
What to bring
A spotting scope is very useful for viewing the animals from a safe distance on the steep slopes. Sturdy footwear and walking sticks are recommended for the rugged terrain.
Getting there
Sorteny Natural Park is accessible by car from Ordino; there is a car park at the entrance. From there, well-marked trails lead to the higher areas where the ibex graze. The climb to Planell de la Coma is especially rewarding.
What to expect
Ibex are resident in the area but move over large distances - systematically scan the slopes with binoculars. With a little patience you will often spot them on green patches or rock ledges.
