Hoggar Mountains (Algeria)

Weather…

The Hoggar Mountains, also known as the Ahaggar, represent a vast highland region in the central Sahara of southern Algeria. This volcanic massif covers approximately 450,000 square kilometers and is characterized by dramatic basaltic peaks and eroded rock formations. The highest point is Mount Tahat, which reaches an elevation of 2,908 meters above sea level. The region is home to the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg people, who have maintained their nomadic traditions and distinct culture for centuries. Geologically, the area consists of Precambrian rocks that were uplifted and later shaped by volcanic activity during the Cenozoic era. The Ahaggar National Park, established in 1987, protects this unique ecosystem where rare species like the Saharan cheetah can still be found. Ancient rock paintings and engravings in the surrounding Tassili n'Ajjer region provide evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic period, around 6000 BCE.
