Located at an elevation of nearly 2,800 meters in the Ahaggar Mountains of southern Algeria, Assekrem is one of the Sahara's most iconic destinations. The plateau is renowned for its otherworldly, volcanic landscape, characterized by towering basalt columns and deep, rocky valleys. The name Assekrem translates to "end of the world" in the local Tuareg language, a fitting description for its remote beauty. The primary attraction is the hermitage of Charles de Foucauld, a French Catholic priest who settled here in 1911. Visitors often undertake the challenging trek or 4x4 journey from Tamanrasset just to witness the legendary sunrise or sunset from this vantage point. As the sun dips or rises, the jagged peaks are bathed in striking shades of red, orange, and purple. The area is deeply connected to Tuareg culture. Reaching Assekrem requires a rugged drive from the city of Tamanrasset, usually organized through local Tuareg guides. The journey itself is an adventure, passing through stark desert scenery. The most suitable time for a visit is between October and April, as the high altitude brings freezing temperatures in winter, yet provides relief from the extreme summer heat.
