Dasht-e Margo

Dasht-e Margo, translating to 'Desert of Death,' is a large desert region in the southern provinces of Helmand and Nimruz in Afghanistan. It is a desolate and forbidding landscape, considered one of the world's most arid regions. Its name is a testament to its harshness, with extreme summer temperatures and a near-total lack of water. The surface consists of a mixture of sand plains, gravel-covered plateaus (dasht), and rocky outcrops. Dry riverbeds and salt flats are common features. This vast expanse is notoriously difficult to cross, and its reputation has been sealed by the many historical accounts of travelers perishing in the attempt. Despite its hostility, the desert supports a sparse but highly adapted ecosystem of resilient flora and fauna.
