Lake McIlwaine (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Lake McIlwaine was the original name of what is now known as Lake Chivero, named after Sir Robert McIlwaine, a High Court judge and conservation pioneer. The reservoir was constructed between 1949 and 1952 to regulate the Manyame River basin and support the industrial growth of the Salisbury region. During the colonial era, it was a premier destination for sailing and aquatic recreation, featuring advanced infrastructure for the time. The lake was renamed Lake Chivero in 1982 following Zimbabwe's independence, as part of a national initiative to Africanize geographic names. Historically, the project was a significant achievement in water engineering, marking one of the first major earth-fill dams in the country. Even under its former name, the site was celebrated for its biological richness and its function as a vital stopover for migratory waterfowl across Southern Africa.
