The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, better known as St. Mary's Cathedral, is a prominent Roman Catholic church in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city. The structure was erected by Jesuits in the early 20th century and was officially consecrated in 1904. The church is distinguished by its Neo-Gothic architecture and was built from red granite sourced from the surrounding areas of Bulawayo. A significant historical milestone was the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1988, which highlighted the church's importance to the region. In 2013, Pope Francis granted it the status of a Minor Basilica, a rare honor in the African ecclesiastical landscape. The basilica serves as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Bulawayo and is a hub for social and religious activities. Its striking towers and artistically designed interior, featuring magnificent altars, make it one of the city's most important cultural heritage sites. It stands as a testament to early missionary work and the endurance of the Catholic faith in Matabeleland.
