Khami Ruins (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Khami Ruins are located west of Bulawayo and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Butua between 1450 and 1650, following the decline of Great Zimbabwe. The site is characterized by a series of terraced stone platforms upon which the mud houses of the elite once stood. Khami is renowned for its sophisticated masonry technique, where decorative patterns such as checkered and herringbone motifs were incorporated directly into the dry-stone walls. Excavations have revealed numerous artifacts from Europe and China, indicating the continuation of global trade links under the Torwa dynasty. Unlike Great Zimbabwe, the walls at Khami are often designed as retaining structures for artificial plateaus, representing a specific architectural development. Since 1986, Khami has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing valuable insights into the late Iron Age in Southern Africa. The ruins stand as an important symbol of the organizational and cultural continuity of the Shona people.
