Lake Placid
Lake Placid gained international fame as the host of the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and 1980. Today, the Olympic Legacy sites remain active, allowing visitors to tour the ski jumps, skate on the Olympic Oval, or ride a bobsled at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. While named after the larger nearby lake, the village actually sits on the shores of the scenic Mirror Lake, which serves as a central hub for summer paddling and winter ice skating. As the gateway to the Adirondack High Peaks, Lake Placid is a hiker's paradise, surrounded by 46 peaks over 4,000 feet. The appealing Main Street is lined with mountain-themed shops, upscale bistros, and the historic Olympic Center, where the 'Miracle on Ice' took place. The local food scene is bustling, blending rustic Adirondack flavors with contemporary culinary trends. Located about 5 hours north of New York City and 2 hours south of Montreal, the village is best accessed by car. Winter is peak season for skiing at the formidable Whiteface Mountain, while summer draws crowds for the Ironman triathlon and lake activities. Autumn is equally spectacular, offering deep forest colors and crisp mountain air.
