Lake George
Lake George is a memorable 32-mile long lake set in the southeastern Adirondack Mountains. It has been a top-tier vacation destination since the late 19th century, earning its nickname 'The Queen of American Lakes' for its exceptionally clear water and surrounding mountain peaks. The Lake George Village at the southern tip serves as the tourist hub, filled with lakeside resorts, mini-golf, and public beaches like Million Dollar Beach. The area is steeped in history, most notably the French and Indian War, with Fort William Henry standing as a preserved museum offering live reenactments. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike up Prospect Mountain for a panoramic view of the 'Narrows' or boat out to one of the lake's 395 islands for a unique camping experience. The Lake George Steamboat Company continues a long tradition of scenic cruises aboard historic vessels. Located about 200 miles north of New York City, it is easily reached via the Adirondack Northway (I-87). Summer is the busiest season, characterized by water skiing and amusement parks, while the fall draws visitors for the Adirondack Balloon Festival and spectacular foliage. Winter activities include the annual Winter Carnival with ice races and polar plunges.
