It is globally recognized as the home of Wilkin & Sons, purveyors of Tiptree jams and preserves since 1885. The factory is a major local employer and operates a visitor center, museum, and traditional tea room. Geographically, the area is defined by Tiptree Heath, a 60-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest that represents the largest fragment of lowland heath remaining in the county. Tiptree is often involved in a friendly rivalry for the title of 'largest village in England'.
