Greater London is an administrative region and ceremonial county in Southeast England, covering the main urban area of London. It was officially created on April 1, 1965, by the London Government Act 1963, replacing the former counties of London and Middlesex and parts of surrounding areas. The region is divided into 32 London Boroughs, while the City of London maintains a special status as a separate ceremonial county within the region. Geographically, Greater London is bounded by the Metropolitan Green Belt, intended to prevent uncontrolled urban sprawl. Administration is handled by the Greater London Authority (GLA), which consists of the directly elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly. This political system was introduced in 2000 to ensure a coordinated strategy for transport, policing, and economic development across the entire metropolitan area. Economically, Greater London is the powerhouse of the United Kingdom, contributing a substantial portion to the national gross domestic product.
