Caerleon is a town of extraordinary historical significance situated on the River Usk in Wales. In ancient times, it was known as Isca Augusta and served as one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain, housing the Legio II Augusta. The archaeological sites are among the most impressive in the country, featuring the only fully excavated Roman amphitheatre in Great Britain, which once seated around 6,000 spectators. In addition to the amphitheatre, visitors can explore the remains of the Roman barracks and the National Roman Legion Museum, which holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Roman finds in Europe. During the Middle Ages, the town gained further fame through the writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth, who designated Caerleon as the traditional site of King Arthur's court. The medieval architecture and surviving sections of the town walls reflect its long-standing strategic importance. Today, Caerleon is a thriving cultural hub and a popular tourist destination that blends ancient history with Welsh charm. It plays a central role in preserving the Roman heritage of Wales and attracts history enthusiasts from around the world.
