Lake Salda (Turkey)

Weather…

Lake Salda is a mid-sized crater lake situated in the Yeşilova district of Burdur Province, southwestern Turkey. Positioned at an elevation of 1,140 meters within the Taurus Mountains, it is one of the deepest lakes in Turkey, reaching depths of approximately 184 meters. The lake is globally renowned for its animated turquoise waters and brilliant white beaches, which are composed of hydromagnesite stromatolites rather than common sand. These mineral formations are of significant interest to astrobiologists; NASA researchers have used Lake Salda as a terrestrial laboratory to study the Jezero Crater on Mars, as the mineralogy is believed to be the closest Earth match. The alkaline waters are rich in magnesium and soda, and the surrounding area is covered by dense pine forests. In 2019, the lake was designated a Special Environmental Protection Area to preserve its unique microbialites and to mitigate the ecological impact of its growing popularity as a tourist destination.

Best season
Summer months are the most popular time for a visit to fully enjoy the turquoise splendor and white beaches. Spring and autumn are quieter, offering milder weather for strolls along the shore without the intense heat of mid-summer.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The lake is a crater lake featuring very fine, white magnesium sand on the shore that feels like powder. The terrain is flat and easily walkable around the permitted areas, while the lake floor can drop off steeply in some parts.
🎒
What to bring
Sun protection is extremely important due to the strong reflection from the white sand. As infrastructure is partially limited, visitors should bring sufficient water and provisions, as well as towels for their stay on the beach.

Parking
Controlled parking areas are available for visitors near the designated beach sections. It is strongly recommended to park only in these spaces to avoid damaging the sensitive natural environment and the calcareous formations on the shore.

Safety
Visitors should only swim in permitted areas and be aware that the water can become deep quickly. To protect the ecosystem, it is vital to leave no litter and avoid stepping on or damaging the white shoreline formations.
⏱️
Time needed
