Mount Nemrut (Turkey)

Weather…

Mount Nemrut in southeastern Turkey is famous for the monumental funerary sanctuary of King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene, dating from the 1st century BC. At the summit, 2134 meters high, the king ordered the construction of an artificial tumulus surrounded by three terraces. These terraces are adorned with colossal statues standing up to nine meters tall, depicting deities, ancestors, and the king himself, whose heads now lie at the feet of their bodies due to earthquakes and weathering. The site reflects the religious syncretism of the Kingdom of Commagene, blending Greek and Persian mythological figures. Alongside the statues are detailed reliefs, including the famous Lion Horoscope, one of the oldest known astronomical records. The mountain's remote location caused the site to be forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery in 1881. Since 1987, Mount Nemrut has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and is regarded as one of the most ambitious construction projects of the Hellenistic era. Visitors typically climb the mountain at sunrise or sunset to witness the dramatic play of light across the ancient stone faces.
