Chott el Djerid

Chott el Djerid is a massive salt pan in southern Tunisia, covering over 5,000 square kilometers. During the summer heat, the water evaporates almost entirely, leaving behind an ethereal, shimmering crust of salt and minerals that can glow in shades from white to purple. This phenomenon makes it one of the most photogenic locations in North Africa. The lake gained worldwide fame as a filming location for the Star Wars movies, specifically as the setting for the planet Tatooine. A paved causeway crosses the lake, connecting Tozeur and Kebili, providing a spectacular driving experience. Along the road, you often see abandoned boats stuck in the salt and small stalls selling 'desert roses,' natural mineral formations found in the area. While there are no permanent settlements on the salt flat itself, the oasis towns on its perimeter are famous for their high-quality dates. The best time to visit is winter or spring, when temperatures are manageable. At sunrise or sunset, the play of light on the salt crystals is an unforgettable experience, where sky and earth seem to merge into one.
