Medina of Sfax (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Medina of Sfax is one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the Mediterranean, founded in 849 AD under the Aghlabid dynasty. It is characterized by its massive limestone ramparts that follow a nearly excellent rectangular plan, retaining their original form for over a millennium. At the heart of the historic district stands the Great Mosque, established concurrently with the walls and serving as a spiritual and architectural anchor for the city. Unlike many other North African medinas, the interior of Sfax remained largely untouched by European colonial urbanism, allowing the traditional network of souks and residential quarters to survive in an authentic state. The monumental gates, such as Bab Diwan, reflect the city's historical importance as a maritime trade hub on the Mediterranean coast. Currently featured on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, the Medina continues to be an animated center of commerce, particularly known for its skilled blacksmiths and traditional olive oil production.
