Sbeitla Ruins (Tunisia)

Weather…

The archaeological site of Sbeitla, known in antiquity as Sufetula, is one of Tunisia's best-preserved Roman cities. Its strategic location on a fertile plateau made it a major center for olive cultivation and the production of olive oil during the imperial era. The most remarkable monument is the Forum, which features a unique Capitol composed of three separate temples dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, rather than a single unified structure. In addition to these religious buildings, Sbeitla is home to monumental arches, such as the Arch of Diocletian dating to the 3rd century, and several early Christian basilicas equipped with intricate mosaic baptisteries. The city played a pivotal role in North African history as the site of the first major battle between the Byzantines and the advancing Arab armies in 647 AD. The ruins provide a vivid chronicle of the city's evolution from a flourishing Roman colony to a Christian Byzantine stronghold prior to the Islamic conquest of the region.
