New Grant is a historically significant village in southern Trinidad, located within the Princes Town Regional Corporation. The name originates from the land grants issued in 1815 and 1816 to Black American soldiers who fought for the British during the War of 1812. These settlers, known as the 'Merikins', established a unique cultural and social foundation for the community that persists today. The geography of New Grant is defined by rolling hills and fertile soil, which was historically dedicated to the flourishing sugar cane industry. In modern times, the village serves as a lively residential and minor commercial center blending traditional farming with small-scale enterprise. Its location near the town of Princes Town makes New Grant a strategic residential area for the regional workforce. The preservation of Merikin heritage and strong community ties remain central to the village's identity.
