Mala'ekula (Tonga)

Weather…

Mala'ekula is the official royal burial ground in Nuku'alofa and has served as the final resting place for Tonga's monarchs since the reign of King George Tupou I. The name translates to 'Red Field', commemorating a historical battle or a royal ceremony. Unlike the ancient stone tombs of Lapaha, the monuments at Mala'ekula are heavily influenced by 19th-century European cemetery architecture. The central tomb of King George Tupou II and Queen Salote Tupou III is particularly grand, adorned with marble and fine carvings. The grounds are typically not open to the general public and are strictly guarded to maintain the sanctity of the site. Only during royal funerals does the area become the stage for nationwide mourning rites, which often last for weeks. The maintenance of the tombs is the responsibility of special traditional guardians known as the 'Nimatapu', whose status is hereditary. Mala'ekula symbolizes the continuity of the Tongan monarchy and the fusion of Polynesian values with Christian traditions.
