Langi Leka (Tonga)

Weather…

Langi Leka is one of the many monumental terraced tombs located in the ancient capital of Lapaha on the island of Tongatapu. Constructed during the peak of the Tu'i Tonga Empire, likely between the 14th and 16th centuries, this royal tomb served as the final resting place for a high-ranking member of the divine dynasty. The structure is built from enormous coral limestone slabs, some of which feature the characteristic L-shaped cornerstones that are a hallmark of Tongan megalithic engineering. Geographically, Langi Leka is part of a dense cluster of over 20 similar tombs that define the landscape of Lapaha, reflecting the area's long history as the political and religious center of Tonga. The scale of the monument and the precision of its construction testify to the immense authority of the Tu'i Tonga and the sophisticated social hierarchy of the time. Today, it is recognized as a key part of Tonga's archaeological heritage and is included in the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
