Oecusse Sandalwood Forests (Timor-Leste)

Weather…

The sandalwood forests of Oecusse are located in the exclave of the same name, surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. For centuries, sandalwood (Santalum album) was the island's most valuable export and the primary reason for the interest of early seafaring traders from China and later from Europe. In Oecusse, particularly around Lifau, the permanent Portuguese presence began in the 16th century, primarily to control the trade of this precious wood. The timber was highly prized for its aromatic scent and medicinal properties, being shipped as far as Macau and India. Today, natural stocks have been severely depleted by centuries of overexploitation, leading to the implementation of strict protection and reforestation programs. Ecologically, the remaining forests are crucial for soil conservation in the exclave's arid landscape. Sandalwood remains a potent symbol of Timorese identity and history, deeply intertwined with the wealth and colonial conflicts of the past.
