Hat Yai is the largest economic center in Southern Thailand, located in Songkhla Province near the Malaysian border. Although it is not the provincial capital, it far exceeds Songkhla city in terms of size and commercial significance. The city developed rapidly starting in the 1920s when it became a major junction for the railway line connecting Thailand with British Malaya. Today, Hat Yai is a premier destination for tourists from Malaysia and Singapore, who frequent the city for its diverse shopping malls and local gastronomy. Geographically, the city is surrounded by mountains, which makes it susceptible to seasonal flooding during the monsoon, leading to the construction of extensive drainage canals. Beyond commerce, the city is a regional education hub, home to the Prince of Songkla University, the largest in Southern Thailand. The Hat Yai Municipal Park, located on the outskirts, provides panoramic views of the urban landscape from its hilltops.
