Bujang Valley is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Malaysia. A sprawling historical complex in the Merbok River area. It is the richest archaeological site in Malaysia, with ruins dating back to the 1st century AD. Over 50 ancient Hindu-Buddhist temples, known as candi, have been excavated. Evidence of an early maritime trading center. The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum displays artifacts from the site. This site holds particular significance in the history of Malaysia, from the Malacca Sultanate through British colonial rule to independence in 1957. Like many notable places in Malaysia, it combines regional character with the legacy of the multicultural Malay-Chinese-Indian society and the tropics. The Bujang Valley is a sprawling outdoor archaeological complex that you can explore on foot. Most temple ruins are freely accessible.

The site is typically open daily from morning until late afternoon. Ask on-site for the exact opening times.

Photography is usually allowed, but do not climb on the ancient structures. Drones require a special permit.
Time needed
Allow at least one to two hours to explore the various temple remains and the museum. The site is extensive.

Combine the visit with the nearby Merbok Mangrove Forest or Sungai Petani town. A boat ride on the Merbok River is also worthwhile.

The Bujang Valley is located near Merbok, Kedah. Reachable by car or bus from Sungai Petani. The entrance is right off the main road.
