Phetchaburi
Phetchaburi, often called 'Muang Phet', is a treasure chest of Thai history and culture. The most prominent landmark is the Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park (Khao Wang), a royal palace complex on a hill that gives a blend of Thai, Chinese, and neoclassical architecture. The cable car ride to the summit provides a splendid view over the entire province. Another must-see is the Khao Luang Cave, an impressive underground sanctuary with numerous Buddha statues magically illuminated by sunbeams falling through an opening in the ceiling. The city itself houses many temples from the Ayutthaya period, such as Wat Mahathat Worawihan. Culinary-wise, Phetchaburi is famous for 'Khanom Mo Kaeng' (a Thai egg custard) and its high-quality palm sugar products. The city is about 120 kilometers from Bangkok and can be easily reached by train or bus, making it a well-suited destination for a day trip. The best time to visit is from November to February when the humidity is lower. Phetchaburi has preserved a very authentic atmosphere as it is less influenced by international tourism than the nearby seaside resorts.
