Penghu Qimei
Qimei, located at the southern tip of the Penghu archipelago, is often called the most romantic island in Taiwan. Its name, meaning 'Seven Beauties', honors a tragic legend of seven local women who chose sacrifice over capture by pirates. The island's undisputed icon is the Twin Heart Stone Weir, an ancient, heart-shaped stone structure built for fishing that has become a global symbol for romance and lasting love. Beyond the stone weirs, Qimei has incredible geological features including dramatic basalt columns and coastal formations like the 'Little Guilin' and 'Great Lion'. The coastline is a masterpiece of dark volcanic rock contrasting with the vivid blue of the South China Sea. Renting a scooter is the most popular way to explore, allowing visitors to loop around the island in a few hours while stopping at various scenic overlooks and historic markers. Local delicacies focus on sun-dried seafood, particularly squid and abalone, which benefit from the island's intense sun and sea breezes. Qimei is accessible via ferry from Magong or Kaohsiung, or by short flights from Magong Airport. The good time to visit is during the calm, sunny months between April and September. It is a quiet, windswept destination that features a first-rate blend of folklore, geology, and coastal charm.
