Kinmen
Kinmen is a fascinating open-air museum located just a few kilometers off the coast of the Chinese city of Xiamen. The island has a dramatic history as a front line in the Cold War, reflected today in impressive military sites like Zhaishan Tunnel or the Guningtou War Museum. Tank traps on beaches and propaganda posters found across the island create a unique atmosphere. Beyond military history, Kinmen is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved traditional Fujianese architecture. Villages like Shuitou or Shanhou showcase magnificent houses with swallow-tail roofs and intricate stone carvings. Another landmark is the 'Wind Lion God' statues, believed to protect residents from sandstorms and evil spirits. The island is also renowned for its Kaoliang liquor production, made from sorghum. Travel is convenient by plane from major Taiwanese cities (approx. 1 hour). There are also ferry links to Xiamen. The best time to visit is autumn, when the weather is dry and not too hot. Kinmen gives a completely different perspective on Taiwan and is a must for history buffs and culture lovers.
