Hamra National Park (Sweden)

Weather…

Hamra National Park is located in the municipality of Ljusdal in Gävleborg County and was originally established in 1909 to protect a small area of untouched primeval forest. At that time, with only 28 hectares, it was one of the smallest national parks in Europe, but it was massively expanded in 2011 to over 1,380 hectares. The expansion now includes a vast mosaic of mires, forests, and waters, which has multiplied the park's ecological value. Hamra is famous for its pines, some over 400 years old, and an enormous variety of mosses, lichens, and fungi specialized in deadwood. Wildlife includes moose, bears, and a rich selection of forest birds such as the capercaillie. An accessible circular trail allows visitors with limited mobility to experience the fascinating primeval forest atmosphere. The park also provides insights into traditional mire use and the significance of natural forest fire cycles. Today, Hamra is a key destination for nature photographers and hikers who appreciate the silence of the North Swedish wilderness.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is reached via a well-signed gravel road branching off from the main routes in the Gävleborg region. The main entrance area serves as the well-suited starting point for all forest trails.
📅
Best season
Late summer and autumn are the absolute best times to visit for those interested in the incredible variety of fungi. Spring has a lush green awakening and fewer biting insects in the dense forest.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The ancient forest floor is uneven, heavily laced with massive tree roots, and frequently damp. Raised wooden boardwalks are provided over the wettest boggy areas to make hiking significantly easier.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended due to the constantly moist, mossy ground. Bring insect repellent during summer, and a magnifying glass if you wish to closely inspect the mosses.
🅿️
Parking
A dedicated parking lot is available right at the main entrance, accommodating a reasonable number of cars and motorhomes. It includes basic facilities and information boards about the forest ecology.
⚠️
Safety
The dense, old-growth environment makes it easy to get disoriented if you wander off the trail. Dead trees and branches are intentionally left to rot naturally and may occasionally fall during strong winds.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend between two and four hours exploring the various circular trails branching out from the entrance. The shorter boardwalk loop can be easily completed by families in under an hour.
