The Castle of Manzanares el Real, often called the New Castle of the Mendozas, is one of the most complete and well-preserved fortresses in the Madrid region. Built starting in 1475 by Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, it represents the final peak of Spanish castle architecture before the rise of modern artillery. The design reflects a transition from a purely military stronghold to a luxurious palatial residence, blending Late Gothic and Mudejar styles. Key architectural features include the massive circular corner towers with intricate granite carvings and the elegant upper gallery designed by Juan Guas. The castle is built primarily from local granite and is surrounded by an outer defensive wall featuring arrowhead-shaped loopholes. Today, the interior serves as a museum displaying 17th-century Flemish tapestries and historical exhibits about Spanish fortresses. Set against the backdrop of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains and the Santillana reservoir, it is a prominent landmark of Spanish heritage.
