Generalife (Spain)

Weather…

The Generalife, derived from the Arabic 'Yannat al-Arif' (Architect's Garden), was the summer palace and rural retreat of the Nasrid Sultans of Granada. Built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries on the slopes of the Cerro del Sol, the estate is situated right next to the Alhambra and provided the rulers with an oasis of tranquility away from the affairs of the court. This masterpiece of Islamic landscape architecture is famous for its terraced gardens, winding pathways, cool courtyards, and sophisticated water engineering. The centerpiece of the Generalife is the Patio de la Acequia (Court of the Water Channel), where a long pool of water is flanked by elegant water jets and lush flowerbeds. The gardens beautifully blend the utility of an agricultural estate with the refined aesthetic of Moorish poetry, standing today as a testament to the first-rate harmony of nature and architecture in Al-Andalus.
