Nizamiye Mosque (South Africa)

Weather…

The Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, positioned between Johannesburg and Pretoria, is a magnificent example of Ottoman architecture completed in 2012. It is a scaled replica of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, Turkey, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The construction was funded by Turkish businessman Ali Katırcıoğlu, who envisioned a center for spiritual and social well-being in South Africa. The mosque features a massive central dome and four minarets that stand 55 meters tall. The broader Nizamiye complex is a multi-functional community hub, housing a school, a medical clinic, a traditional bazaar, and a cemetery. The interior is adorned with authentic hand-painted Iznik tiles and intricate calligraphy, making it one of the most visually memorable religious structures in the country and a symbol of multicultural harmony.
