Mogadishu Port (Somalia)

Weather…

The Port of Mogadishu is Somalia's principal seaport, located on the Indian Ocean coast in the capital. Built with Chinese assistance, it opened in 1968 and has four berths with a total length of about 700 meters and a depth of up to 12 meters. It handles the majority of Somalia's imports, including food, fuel, construction materials, and consumer goods. Before the civil war, Mogadishu was also a transshipment hub for regional trade in coffee, bananas, and livestock. After decades of destruction and neglect, the port was rehabilitated by Turkish company Albayrak from 2013 and has been operated by Turkey since 2016. Current cargo throughput is around 2 million tonnes per year. The port is critical to the Somali economy but suffers from inefficiencies and competition from the more efficient Berbera Port. Plans for expansion and modernization are ongoing, but security and institutional challenges persist.
