Al-Uruba Hotel (Somalia)

Weather…

The Al-Uruba Hotel in Mogadishu was once the architectural jewel of the Somali coast and an epitome of elegance and modernity. Built in the 1970s directly on the shores of the Indian Ocean, the hotel was famous for its distinctive white arches and Oriental-inspired architecture. It served as a prestigious venue for international conferences, high-society weddings, and visits from heads of state across the Arab world and Africa. Its location near the port and the popular Lido Beach made it a central hub for social life in the capital. However, with the onset of the civil war in 1991, the hotel became the site of fierce battles and was almost completely destroyed. The striking ruins, with their skeletal circular arches, are now one of the most photographed symbols of "old Mogadishu." They serve as a reminder of the city's former splendor when it was known as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean." Although the building is currently uninhabitable, it remains a cultural landmark that embodies the longing for peace and reconstruction in Somalia.
