El Barde is a town in the Bakool region of southwestern Somalia, near the Ethiopian border. Situated at an elevation of approximately 320 meters, it serves as a local trade center for livestock and agricultural products such as sorghum and maize. The population is estimated at around 10,000, predominantly from the Rahanweyn clan. Historically, El Barde has been a transit point for cross-border trade with Ethiopia, but its development has been hindered by recurrent droughts and conflicts. The town has basic infrastructure: a primary school, a health post, and a market. There is no electricity grid or piped water system; residents rely on wells and generators. Livestock herding and subsistence farming are the main economic activities. The lack of industry and limited access to education and healthcare present significant challenges. El Barde's remote location and harsh climate contribute to its low profile on the national stage.
