Robert Louis Stevenson Tomb (Samoa)

Weather…

The tomb of Robert Louis Stevenson is located at the summit of Mount Vaea, overlooking the Samoan capital of Apia. The renowned Scottish author spent his final years in Samoa, where he was known as 'Tusitala' (Teller of Tales) and advocated for the rights of the indigenous people. Following his sudden death in 1894, the Samoans fulfilled his wish by burying him on the mountain with a view of the Pacific Ocean. The ascent to the tomb follows the 'Road of Loving Hearts,' a path built by local chiefs in gratitude for Stevenson's support. The tomb itself is a simple concrete sarcophagus engraved with his famous poem 'Requiem.' The site serves not only as a monument to world literature but also as a symbol of the deep bond between Stevenson and the Samoan people. From the summit, one can see the coastline and the Villa Vailima estate, which is now a museum dedicated to his life.
