Poutasi is a major village located on the southern coast of Upolu island in Samoa, serving as the administrative center for the Falealili district. The village is situated on a coastal plain and has historically relied on fishing and subsistence agriculture, particularly the cultivation of taro and coconuts. In September 2009, Poutasi was severely impacted by a powerful tsunami that followed an 8.1 magnitude earthquake, resulting in significant structural damage and loss of life. Since the disaster, the community has undergone extensive reconstruction, incorporating more resilient infrastructure and inland relocation strategies. The village is also recognized for its strong traditional governance system, led by the local matai (chiefs), who play a crucial role in managing communal lands and resources. Poutasi remains a vital hub for the surrounding settlements, hosting schools and local government services that support the southern region of the island.
