💡 Tips
- Visit the To-Sua Ocean Trench early in the morning to beat the crowds and capture the best photos.
- Bring sturdy water shoes for To-Sua; the wooden ladder can be slippery, and the rock pools are sharp.
- Sunday is a day of rest in Samoa; many local shops will be closed, and respectful behavior is expected.
- Keep small Tala notes handy for village entry fees or accessing certain coastal attractions.
- Swim only when it's safe and always heed local warnings about tides and currents.

Lotofaga is a historically significant village on the southern coast of Upolu, widely recognized beyond Samoa for the To-Sua Ocean Trench natural wonder. The village is situated in a volcanic landscape characterized by dramatic basalt cliffs and lush tropical vegetation. Historically, Lotofaga is the ancestral seat of the powerful Fiame family, which has produced prominent political leaders, including the first Prime Minister of Samoa. The community plays a central role in national politics and maintains strict traditional protocols within its Matai system. In addition to tourism surrounding the To-Sua trench, the local economy is driven by fishing and agriculture, particularly coconut and cocoa cultivation. The coastal zone was also affected by the 2009 tsunami, but the resilient community quickly restored its infrastructure. Lotofaga is regarded as a prime example of the integration between ecological tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage in Samoa.
